The trailer for Gwyneth Paltrow's country movie has arrived and, boy, is it hoping the success of Jeff Bridges and "Crazy Heart" will repeat itself. in "Country Strong," Gwyneth plays Kelly, a successful country singer whose career went off the deep end when she became an alcoholic (sound familiar?). Now out of rehab, her husband/manager (played by Tim McGraw) is sending her on a comeback tour with a young country pop star played by Leighton Meester. There's lots of tears and twang, people, but despite scenes of a drunk and sloppy Gwynnie, this movie looks like it lacks any real grit. Like a made-for-TV movie trying to play on the big screen. Besides, I am just not buying Gwyneth as a Southerner. She's way too WASP-y.

It's hard to think about the movies when this entire week has been about Mad Men. It's such a great show. Jon Hamm is ruling the small screen as 'Don Draper' but the big screen is in the near future. This September he's a tough FBI agent interrogating the likes of Ben Affleck, Rebecca Hall and Blake Lively in the crime thriller THE TOWN. That movie will play at the Toronto International Film Festival in September. Toronto is often used as a launching pad for Oscar campaigns so we'll see if the movie can muster up any buzz for its stars. The festival just announced the first batch of the movies and Canada will be Hollywood North come September. Other movies looking to cause a stir include RABBIT HOLE with Nicole Kidman as a grieving mom, BLACK SWAN with Natalie Portman as a haunted ballerina, THE CONSPIRATOR a Lincoln assassination drama from Robert Redford and THE KING'S SPEECH which could give Colin Firth another go at the Oscar. He was pretty great in A Single Man (have you seen it now that it's on DVD?) last year but he lost to Jeff Bridges in Crazy Heart. The television industry made George Clooney a full-fledged star(who didn't love Dr. Doug Ross on ER?) and is now rewarding the actor with a special honor, but not for his impressive body of acting, producing or directing work. According to People, the Academy of Television Arts and Sciences will present Clooney, 49, with a Bob Hope Humanitarian Award at this years Emmys. Clooney has been active in humanitarian efforts for years, and is being recognized by the Academy at next month's ceremony for his help in the organization of telethons for 9/11, Hurricane Katrina, and the earthquake in Haiti (all of which raised millions in relief aid), as well as his work to raise awareness about the horrific genocide in the Darfur region of Sudan. John Shaffner, the TV Academy’s Chairman and CEO, said in a statement, “George was an obvious choice for this honor. He has understood and harnessed the power of television, the most powerful medium of our time, to reach into the hearts of people around the world and compelled us to action on behalf of those in sudden and desperate need, as well those tragically oppressed in Darfur.” The star joins a short list of people to receive the prestigious honor; prior recipients include Oprah Winfrey, Bill Cosby, and the late Danny Thomas. As Entertainment Weekly notes, "The Bob Hope Humanitarian Award goes to someone whose humanitarian work has brought credit to the industry and has had a lasting impact on society."We'd certainly have to agree that Clooney has done just that. Clooney, 49, testified Friday in a Milan courtroom and said, "I came here because I believe in the judicial system and because there were people using my name to take advantage of people." According to CNN, the actor, who is suing for 3 million euros in damages, took the stand for about a half-hour during the two-hour trial. "My signature is very easy to find on the Internet. But if someone wanted to borrow my signature, they should borrow various signatures of mine, not always the same one for a hundred times,"the Oscar winner noted about the use of his name on the product (the line itself was not so subtly called "George Clooney") he did not endorse. 2009 ended on a high note for Jeff Bridges as his performance in "Crazy Heart" was universally lauded, and would go on to win the actor his first Oscar. But the year also started off on a high note for Jeff, albeit in a much different capacity. In "The Men Who Stare at Goats," Jeff's character, Bill Django, indulges in more mind-bending hallucinogens than everyone at Woodstock -- combined. It was all in the name of world peace, however. OK, not so much for the betterment of society, but since he was the leader of an elite military force of mental warriors with the ability to kill goats using their thoughts, few people had the cajones to say, "Um, hey, whaddya think about maybe just one tab of LSD today?" Tomorrow marks the DVD release of "Men Who Stare at Goats" and below is just one of the many extended scenes featured on the disc. Instead, the actor (whohad previously won an Oscarfor Best Supporting Actor in 2005's Syriana) checked Jeff Bridges name for his work in Crazy Heart! The New York Post reports that George Clooney's publicist has confirmed this story: George voted for rival Jeff Bridges to win the Academy Award for Best Actor this year, despite being nominated in the category himself. George reportedly even took a photograph of his ballot and sent it to Jeff. "Story is true. According to George, 'It was an amazing performance.'
