After weeks of controversy surrounding the late night television war, Jay Leno returned to his post at The Tonight Show. Leno, 59, who had stepped down from hosting the late night NBC show for Conan O'Brien to take over, moved on to the ultimately doomed The Jay Leno Show. When Leno wanted his old time slot back, O'Brien opted to leave the arena completely (but not withouta group of devoted followers, also known as Team Conan.) Leno, officially back at his 11:35 p.m. slot, started with a Wizard of Oz sequence (complete with Betty White)wondering if it had all been a bad dream (we bet Team Conan is wondering the same thing!) Back on his old set, Leno was accompanied (for now)by band leader Kevin Eubanks and told his audience "It's good to be home,"followed by, "I'm your host, at least for a while." Leno, who made no mention of O'Brien, 46, did joke that he was nervous because David Letterman and Oprah would be watching him. Of course, besides the circumstances of last night's show, it was all pretty much business as usual for Leno. He started with his opening monologue, had a skit (about finding his new Late Show desk, with appearances by Adam Corolla and Randy Jackson), conducted interviews with actor/rapper Jamie Foxx (who roused the crowd with a Leno chant) and gold medal Olympian Lindsey Vonn, and welcomed a musical guest (Brad Paisley). While ratings for Leno's return have not yet come in, there's been no shortage of opinions on the web. ABC called the return "semi-triumphant" while EW television critic Ken Tucker was less than impressed by Leno's statement that he was happy to be home, writing, "Ha-ha-ha, oh, oh, I get it: Conan was a bully who kicked poor Jay out of his own house." Leno's fellow late night hosts chimed in on the situation as well, including Letterman, 62, who told his viewers, "My name is David Letterman, same time, same host,"while Jimmy Fallon, who celebrated the one-year anniversary of his time on Late Night, opened with, "Welcome to Late Night with Jimmy Fallon:NBC's longest-running nightly comedy show!" Winfrey did just that when she had Kirstie Alley on her show and brought up an interview the actress did with People in 2009. In said interview, Alley, 59, claimed "I haven't been having sex"and wanted "a booty call with Jamie Foxx. For real. I've always had a bit of a thing for him." "I don't envision marrying Jamie Foxx but I could envision being in Italy with him for three weeks," the actress jokes. To her surprise, "The Oprah Winfrey Show" had contacted Foxx to come on the program through closed-circuit TV. Alley was so excited she started to kiss the television that Foxx was appearing on and the Oscar winner played along, kissing back. Simon Cowell has spoken out about the rumors swirling regarding who will replace him as a judge on the next season of American Idol. Stars including shock jock Howard Stern, Elton John, Jamie Foxx and Madonna have been suggested, but Simon doesn't think any of them are right for the job. "I know Howard's name has been in there for a while, but I'm fairly certain that there hasn't been an approach at any time for Howard to do this show," says Simon. "My advice would be to find somebody who actually knows what they're talking about and has actually experienced success in the music business," he adds. But he does believe that blogger Perez Hilton could do the job, and he'd love singing sensation Lady Gaga to be a mentor. "I think we should have Lady Gaga. She is the most relevant pop artist in the world at the moment. I met her and she's very smart. I like her," he adds.
