Despite Carrie Prejean's claims that the Miss California pageant was unfriendly to her homophobic views, one Lauren Ashley is treading in her footsteps — by saying gays should die.Specifically, Miss Beverly Hills 2010, who will compete in November's Miss California pageant, told Fox News, The Bible says that marriage is between a man and a woman. In Leviticus it says, 'If man lies with mankind as he would lie with a woman, both of them have committed an abomination. They shall surely be put to death and their blood shall be upon them.' The Bible is pretty black and white. And: I feel like God himself created mankind and he loves everyone, and he has the best for everyone. If he says that having sex with someone of your same gender is going to bring death upon you, that's a pretty stern warning, and he knows more than we do about life. It's not clear how loving everyone and "having the best for everyone" are compatible with putting gays to death, but consistency may not be Ashley's strong suit, theologically or otherwise. Asked if she's worried that her views will damage her chance of winning, she says, That isn't really the issue. I have a lot of friends that are gay, and ... I have a lot of friends who have different views, and we share our views together. There's no hate between me and anyone. Except for, like, the part about how she thinks they should die. Keith Lewis, the pageant director much maligned by Prejean in her book Still Standing, says Ashley's views won't hurt her in the competition: "The Miss California USA system has always had a place for an individual's thoughts and opinions when it comes to all sides of political issues." And while last year's pageant said it aimed to "reflect the progressive attitudes of the contestants as well as our forward- looking state," it's possible that in the wake of Prejean's book, organizers want to refute the claim that they discriminate against conservative contestants. Could homophobia actually be a smart move for Ashley, positioning her as the next darling of Sean Hannity and the religious right? The Carrie Prejean Media Machine lost some steam after Prejean's sex tape scandal, and it's possible that la Prejean will fade from public life after her upcoming opposite marriage. Time for a pretty new bigot to step into the breach? Maybe, but Ashley should know the risks. Fox News reports that although "she parties with Paris Hilton," she's also saving herself for marriage. Ashley says, I feel like my body is the Temple of God and it's my temple so it's really good to treat it well. I also feel like sex was made for marriage. You really show your future husband or wife respect and you build a lot of trust before you get married. You don't have sex with other people, so that should definitely build trust, because you waited. If it turns out that Ashley's sexual mores aren't as rigid as those she would impose on others, she may well find herself Prejeanized. Going into the new season of "Project Runway" the designer I was least looking forward to meeting was Anthony Williams. His "it's hell being gay and black in the ghetto" quote had been used to death in every promo and led me to believe he'd be an intentionally over-the-top character who never let a chance to "get sassy" pass him by. But once the show premiered, I learned that my mother was right -- you should never judge a book by its cover. Anthony has not only turned out to be one of the only genuine sources of hilarity this season, but also one hell of a designer. I am still miffed his gorgeous red burlap dress wasn't last week's victor! I recently sat down with the Georgia peach to talk all about "Project Runway," his fellow designers and the shocking pseudo-celebrity Anthony would be down to dress! PopWrap: I read this was the first time you ever auditioned for "Project Runway," what changed your mind? Anthony Williams: To be perfectly honest, I had always put it out into the universe that I would be interested in applying for "Project Runway" and three days before the deadline, my friend sent me the audition link. So I did it on a whim. PW: Was it an easy process for you? Anthony: Oh not at all. I walked in and they didn't like half of my stuff. They told me it looked like Oscar de la Renta, Lavin and stuff they'd seen before. Honey, do you think that hurt my feelings? I've never been hurt by being linked to greatness! But I left with a question mark over my head. I wasn't even going to check for a call back, but something told me to -- and sure enough, I'd made it. PW: We've seen two dresses from you so far, how do you feel about your work on screen? Anthony: The first challenge, I ran into so many problems. I thought I was going to lay down and cover myself in that fabric. I can't even talk about that dress. The second challenge, [I loved my dress]. People said that you couldn't see how pretty it was on TV, but you can online -- where I had the highest votes from fans. PW: Pamela's elimination last week surprised many people -- do you think Ping deserved to go home instead? Anthony: I did think she should be eliminated, but when people have conversations about this, I say: Do you remember what Pamela designed in the first episode? They say no. Then I ask, do you remember what Ping designed in the first episode? They say yes. With her, you want to see more. At the end of the day, they could film people in sweatshops sewing all day long -- that's not entertainment. This is about personality as well. PW: Last week you got into a spat with another designer, Mila, because her model Alexis opted to work with you instead. Were you surprised Mila took it so personally and lashed out at you? Anthony: No, Mila did that because she doesn't love herself. Look, I have been very clear about the fact I left my feelings back in Georgia. But I thought that situation was interesting because Mila could have confronted Alexis like a grown woman when she came for the model fitting. But Mila chose not to use that opportunity, so don't open your damn mouth and say something to me. I just thought, what a petty 50 year old! PW: You've talked about wanting to design for Miss USA and Miss Universe but not Miss America -- why? Anthony: They don't wear standard pageant dresses! A former Miss Universe wore Gucci for the evening gown portion -- later, you saw Oprah in the damn dress! I know people say Rihanna or Beyonce, but I'm interested in being a part of things that are established as a legacy. I guarantee that I won't be going back to the ghetto when this is over! PW: Would you dress Carrie Prejean if asked? Anthony: You know, I don't think she meant anything ugly by that. I think she spoke from who she is -- and the reality is, if she's been taught and groomed to think that homosexuality is a sin, then I think we should celebrate her for being authentically herself. In the wake of Scott Brown's senatorial win, pundits are asking whether racy pics like those of him in a 1982 Cosmo would have torpedoed the campaign of a female candidate.For those who haven't been following beefcake-gate, Brown won the magazine's "America's Sexiest Man" contest, and was pictured in the centerfold coyly hiding his (small?) penis and balls with his wrist. Joe Coscarelli of Mediaite said the photo could prove "problematic for Brown," but it totally wasn't — Monica Hesse of the Washington Post writes, "The general reaction from the media over the past few months can be described as ranging from 'Meh,' to 'Oh, Sen. Brown!'" But, asks Hesse, "How different would the story have looked if the shoe — Lack of shoes? Lack of clothes? — actually had been on the female body?" The consensus seems to be: pretty fucking different. Jeanne Cummings and Erika Lovley of Politico write, If a male attorney general and former prosecutor had been running against a woman who'd posed nude for Cosmopolitan magazine and whose law practice consisted mainly of real estate closings, would he have been the one reduced to praying for a squeaker victory? Would she have even gotten elected to the state Senate? No and no are the probable answers. And both Rachel Maddow and James Carroll point out that while Massachusetts is usually thought of as a liberal state, it has a pretty crappy record of electing women. Maddow reports that Massachusetts has never had a female governor or a female senator, and that Brown's opponent Martha Coakley is its first ever female attorney general. And Carroll writes in The Daily Beast, It's an old story in Massachusetts-one that cuts across the boundaries of party and liberal-conservative competition. Democrats don't tap women for the top jobs, and neither do Republicans. Female nominees are subject to expectation tests, press scrutiny, and double standards that males know nothing of. Beneath all the analysis, something irrational and sinister and sexist is at work. So perhaps Massachusetts is especially vulnerable to the sexist viewpoint crisis management specialist Eric Dezenhall describes to Hesse: "Men who are naughty are [viewed as] just dudes being dudes. Women who are naughty are unstable and must be stopped." And it certainly seems that no matter what state you live in, images of semi-nude men fail to inspire the slut-shaming often heaped on women who take it off. But maybe we aren't giving voters enough credit. Maybe we truly have entered into an age of acceptance, in which a few pictures of one's young body are no bar to public office.
